Today a witch from the land of Oz, Evanora, the Wicked Witch of the East as seen in Disney’s prequel Oz, the Great and Powerful.
About the Look
As the title suggests, Evanora’s film is ostensibly about the Wizard, Kansas carnival performer Oscar Diggs, before he was ‘of Oz’. But the three witches steal the show. In the novel, and the 1939 classic film, the Wicked Witch of the East is killed when Dorothy’s house lands on her. We don’t know who she is beyond what she is: wicked, a witch, and owner of magic shoes.
Here, she has murdered and manipulated her way into control of the Emerald City and therefore Oz. Evanora is not unlike Cersei. She’s ambitious, she’s angry, and she destroys the only person she loves, her younger sister, Theodora.
The film is sympathetic to Oscar, to Glinda, and even to Theodora. Evanora is the villain. But there are hints of complexity. And it’s interesting that she is costumed to reflect the Emerald City, the kingdom at the center of Oz. We know that city. It’s beautiful and shining, and elitist and false. And Oscar and his friends win by putting on a show built on a lie, exactly as Evanora did to them.
About My Look
The costumes in this film! Gah. I already owned the cloak, purchased from a theater thinning its costume collection. I was unable to find a suitable Evanoresque dress, but I found this delightful sweater on one of my Savers trips. It’s Emerald City the Sweater and I love it.
The green eye paint by L’Oreal was initially purchased for my Hera Syndulla look, and I also used it for Maleficent. I’m wearing a gold lipstick. And though none of the photos quite capture it, I’ve a green earring to reference Evanora’s magic necklace. I do wish I had feathers for my hair
